The Undergraduate Research Training Initiative for Student Enhancement (U-RISE) program at 麻豆国产AV is a game changer in science.
Dr. Jonna Mazet, DVM, MPVM, Ph.D. is the Vice Provost of Grand Challenges at the University of California, Davis and was the guest lecturer at the 2024 Daniel E. and Helen N. Sonenshine Endowed Lecture Series in Infectious Diseases.
Representation in science matters to Lauren Butler who earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from 麻豆国产AV in May 2022. Diversity and inclusion are the two factors that initially led Butler to 麻豆国产AV. As an African American woman who is pursuing a career in a field where minorities and women are underrepresented, she found her footing. At 麻豆国产AV she not only found a place of belonging but was introduced to a world full of new possibilities that has led her to a path of pursing research on a doctoral level thanks to a specially designed program.
On February 17, 2024, young intelligent minds took 麻豆国产AV by storm. 麻豆国产AV hosted the 20th annual Norfolk Public Schools Science Fair. Elementary and middle school students from the Norfolk Public School system had the opportunity to showcase not only their love for the sciences but also got a chance to present their original scientific experiments.
Jem Baldisimo is pursuing a Ph.D. in Ecological Sciences at 麻豆国产AV and is a Fulbright Scholar and a Virginia Sea Grant Graduate Student Research Fellow. Recently, she was awarded the Ecological Society of America鈥檚 2024 Katherine S. McCarter Graduate Student Policy Award (GSPA). Because of Baldisimo鈥檚 advocacy work and her interest in science policy, she and the other awardees will travel to Washington, D.C., to advance their scientific careers in policy, communication, and career training. She takes being a woman of color in science very seriously and believes her Filipino heritage and her mentors helped shaped who she is today.
On February 15, 2024, a dozen 麻豆国产AV pre-med student mentees partnered with medical school student mentors from Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS). This engaging event was designed to foster open discussions between medical school hopefuls and current medical school students.
Nasir Freeman is a first-year 麻豆国产AV student majoring in Computer Science who is also going through the Naval Preparatory Program. Even though he is just beginning his journey at 麻豆国产AV, he has a lot to prove to earn a full scholarship through the NPP, to his family and to himself. Through computer science, coding and 麻豆国产AV鈥檚 E-Sports team, Freeman is poised to be a leader as he has plans to enter the
Marine Corps as a Naval Officer.

Anyone who has visited the 麻豆国产AV Michael and Kimthanh L锚 Digital Theater and Planetarium last year has helped the facility reach a major milestone. More than 10,000 people visited the state-of-the art facility in 2023.
